Remembering Dweezil

In 2005, my wife and I first went to Costa Rica. I had researched the area for years, thet. We first went to the Osa Peninsula and stayed at the luxurious Luna Lodge. I had never even seen the Pacific Ocean before. One afternoon we went to the shore. The seas are rough in that part of Costa Rica, but we were able to wade a little in the ocean.

As soon as my feet touched the salt water of the Pacific, memories of a certain little capuchin monkey flooded my brain, so unexpectedly. Why would I think of my long-dead best friend and companion, Dweezil, at that moment? I had no idea, but it was a powerful moment. I have always wanted to tell Dweezil's story in a book, but could not decide whether I wanted to write a children's book or one for adults. Suddenly, at that moment, the book now had an ending as well as a beginning. I began to realize that I had always thought that I had rescued Dweezil. But when I realized that my love for him is what started my journey towards creating this nature preserve, I realized that this was the fulfillment that I sought for my own life, and that actually, it was Dweezil that had rescued me.

My wife said, "I've got the title for your book--Heart of Alabaster." Remember the song by Sting, "I shall turn your heart to alabaster when you've learned your servant is your master." Perfect! This won't be easy, but it's the getting there that is where the joy of the experience lies.

The big hold-up for the book is that I want to illustrate it. And I am as busy as a one-armed paperhanger. It is my hope that once I'm living in Costa Rica, I can slow down the hands of time, write the text, do the drawings, and get her done.
